Project Overview
From March 2026 to March 2027, SOCOTEC Nederland is carrying out an extensive monitoring program during the replacement of approximately 600 meters of the waterside sheet pile wall of the intake canal at PWN in Andijk. This canal plays a crucial role in the drinking water supply of North Holland, as it transports water from the IJsselmeer to the storage basin of the PWN treatment plant, where it is purified into drinking water for thousands of residents. The landside sheet pile wall will remain in place during the works.
During execution, minor movements of the sheet pile wall or the surrounding dike structure may occur, and vibrations may arise from construction activities. Such deviations could affect the continuity of the drinking water supply, making a careful and continuous monitoring program essential.
SOCOTEC Nederland is responsible for implementing the full monitoring program and the Plan of Approach, which is based on a monitoring plan developed by a third party. Our specialized teams work closely together during both the preparatory and execution phases to continuously monitor the critical components of the project. This includes the sheet pile wall structure, the surrounding dike body, and adjacent structures. Through the targeted use of monitoring points, efficient and focused monitoring is achieved, ensuring that all relevant movements and vibrations are recorded and any deviations are detected in a timely manner.

Challenges and Approach
The project combines technical precision with operational complexity. During the works, the sheet pile wall and the surrounding dike structure may exhibit minor movements, and vibrations from construction activities may occur that could potentially cause damage to structures. In addition, access to the site is limited, requiring careful deployment of monitoring equipment and meticulous planning of operations. At the same time, the drinking water supply for North Holland must remain continuously guaranteed, which demands precise planning and control of all critical elements.
To address these challenges, the specialized teams of SOCOTEC Nederland closely monitor all critical components of the project during both the preparatory and execution phases. Movements, vibrations, and potential effects on adjacent structures are continuously recorded and analyzed, enabling immediate detection of any deviations. Our pragmatic approach and rapid response ensure that preventive measures can be taken where necessary, safeguarding the safety and stability of the sheet pile wall.
For these activities, advanced monitoring equipment is used, including Leica instruments for precise elevation and coordinate measurements, and Locator One digital beacons for real-time position data. This combination of measurement methods enables SOCOTEC Nederland to immediately detect deviations and provide timely advice on preventive measures, ensuring the sheet pile wall remains safe and the drinking water supply continues uninterrupted.
Results and Added Value
Thanks to continuous and targeted monitoring, the project can be executed on schedule without delays or disruption to the drinking water supply. Any deviations are immediately identified, allowing preventive measures to be taken before they impact water delivery.
The work is carried out efficiently by focusing measurements only on critical points and optimally aligning resources with key safety aspects. This approach results in cost-effective monitoring, directly benefiting the client. In addition, the project provides valuable insights for future infrastructure projects, particularly in terms of team collaboration and the use of specialized monitoring equipment.
Expertise of SOCOTEC Nederland
With this project, SOCOTEC Nederland demonstrates how Monitoring & Surveying contributes to the safe execution of complex infrastructure projects. Independent measurements and analyses provide both the client and PWN with assurance that activities are carried out within safe limits. In this way, a controlled execution of the sheet pile wall replacement is achieved, while ensuring a reliable and uninterrupted drinking water supply in North Holland.
