In the case of building on or below ground level, the risks related to the underground are much greater, and often less easy to interpret, than with construction activities above ground, whether it concerns the construction of large earthworks, the installation of foundation piles or the realisation of a complex construction pit in an urban area. SOCOTEC can provide insight into these risks, both technically and financially, and propose methods to eliminate or mitigate the risks. With more than 20 geotechnical and environmental engineers, we cover the entire geotechnical spectrum from foundation design, dewatering, earth retaining structures and crane hardstands to settling and stability analyses, but also the environmental technical spectrum from a simple NEN study to remediation supervision.
In order to properly map out the geotechnical and environmental risks, insight is required into the soil structure and groundwater, but also into the surroundings of a project, especially if construction is taking place in a city centre. Insight is required not only into the condition of the surrounding buildings and the type of foundation, but also, for example, into the presence of (underground) infrastructure, groundwater contamination, vulnerable nature, protected areas and cold-heat storage installations.

During execution of the project, the project location itself and the surroundings can be continuously monitored in the context of risk management, so that execution can be adjusted if necessary or any damage claimed can be clearly assessed and settled.
